Before converting a bank statement PDF, confirm that it is the complete bank-issued statement for the right account and period. Preserve that original file, make sure it opens correctly, and identify any pages or rows that may need extra review. A converter cannot reconstruct a page that was never included in the source.
Pre-conversion checklist
- Confirm the account name or number and statement period.
- Check the first and last page and look for gaps in page numbering.
- Make sure transaction rows and amounts are legible at normal zoom.
- Keep all pages in the original order and avoid cropped screenshots.
- Note opening balance, closing balance, and any statement summary totals.
- Check whether the PDF is password-protected or restricted before sending it to an approved tool.
Digital PDFs and scans are not the same
A PDF downloaded from the bank may contain selectable text; a scan or photograph may contain only page images. Tools differ in whether they support image-only files. Do not assume a scanned statement will be processed like a digital PDF. Confirm the product's documented requirements and follow the bank and firm's rules for creating any permitted copy.
Protect the source and the data
Keep the bank-issued PDF unchanged in the approved records location. Use a copy for any permitted preparation step, and do not remove information that is necessary for checking the transaction. Before using an online service, confirm that it is approved for client financial data. The privacy checklist provides questions to ask.
After conversion, compare back to the PDF
Check transaction counts, dates, debit and credit direction, balances, and entries at page boundaries. Investigate missing or ambiguous rows rather than silently filling them in. The converter test plan offers a repeatable comparison, while the Tally review checklist covers the accounting checks before import.
