Can ChatGPT Convert a Bank Statement to Tally XML?

See where a general-purpose AI assistant may help with statement data and why privacy, XML validation, and transaction review remain essential.

A general-purpose AI assistant may help transform a small, clearly described set of transaction data, but a plausible-looking XML response is not proof that every row was read correctly or that Tally will accept the file. Treat the output as a draft unless it has been validated against the source statement, the target Tally format, and your firm's controls.

Where a chat assistant might help

With non-sensitive sample data, an assistant can help explain columns, draft a mapping rule, or show an example of structured output. Those tasks are different from reliably extracting a multi-page PDF, preserving every row and balance, and generating XML that matches a particular Tally import contract.

Why a generated file needs independent checks

  • Rows can be omitted, duplicated, or split incorrectly around page breaks.
  • Dates, decimal places, debit/credit signs, or running balances can be misread.
  • A narration does not always reveal the correct ledger or voucher type.
  • XML can be well-formed but still fail Tally's expected structure or company settings.

Compare row counts and totals, inspect exceptions, validate the XML structure, and import into a test company before using the result in live books. See the statement test protocol.

Treat the statement as sensitive data

Before entering or uploading a real statement, check the tool's current data controls, retention rules, access model, and your firm's client approval requirements. Do not assume that a personal chat account, business workspace, API, or third-party conversion service has the same terms. Use only a route approved for the data and purpose.

OpenAI documents account controls in its ChatGPT Data Controls and file handling in its File Uploads FAQ. Review the current terms directly before use; provider policies and account settings can change.

A safer evaluation

Start with synthetic or properly anonymized sample rows, not a client's live file. Define the required output fields, run the same completeness and balance checks you would use for any converter, and record what remains a human decision. For a dedicated workflow, compare tools using the software evaluation checklist and the privacy checklist.
